What is a Chiropractic Balanced Approach?
Chiropractic Health Care is based on a powerful premise: With a healthy balanced lifestyle and normally functioning central nervous system and joints, your body is better able to heal itself. That’s because the central nervous system and spinal cord, which is protected by the skull and spine, is the main pathway of the nervous system. It controls movement, feeling and function throughout your body. Chiropractic health-care focuses on treating joint dysfunction through natural methods using adjustments, physiotherapy and nutrition to help unblock areas that cannot function normally so the body can then heal itself. This dysfunction can put pressure on the spinal cord or on the nerves that exit through the spinal cord affecting nerves, muscles, hormones and neurotransmitters. The result is pain and other symptoms, such as numbness or tingling, digestive issues, sleep disturbance, often at the site of the misalignment and frequently related sites elsewhere in the body. Chiropractors use adjustments to return the body to a more normal position or motion, removing blockages and ill health along with physiotherapy and nutrition to help restore normal balance to the body.
Why Therapeutic Massage is Important
To understand the importance of massage, it helps us to understand stress. Stress is an automatic reaction to anything we perceive as a threat. In a stressful situation, our response is fight of flight. It doesn’t matter if it’s danger or the stress of everyday living. Our body responds with tensing of the muscles, shallow and more rapid breathing, increased adrenaline, heart rate and blood pressure. Hopefully, once removed from the stressful situation, things return to normal. However if you find yourself consistently under a great deal of stress, it becomes more difficult to let go and relax. Systems of the body like the Adrenals or other Endocrine functions can become affected leading to imbalance and tightened structures in the body.
Therapeutic massage and stretching can help you regain and maintain proper alignment. When muscles are relaxed and restored to their optimal length, correct posture and alignment are more easily sustained. If you simply adjust the body but do not restore proper length and mechanics of the muscle then the muscles will pull the body back out of alignment. So doing a combination of both is key to helping the body heal.
Therapeutic Massage can trigger the relaxation response, relieving the negative effects of stress and restoring balance in the body. Some positive effects of the relaxation response include slower heart rate, deeper breathing more relaxed muscles, and better internal circulation and digestion.
Therapeutic Massage, Nutrition, and Adjustments
Local therapeutic massage is often used in preparation for adjustments. Massage relieves the muscle tension and warms up the soft tissues in the area, making joints more pliable and more easily adjusted. Many chiropractors themselves (or an assistant) prepare an area with local massage. At our office we always do massage in combination and also have two massage therapists on staff who can do extended 40, 1 hour and 90 min sessions to really focus on long term problems, injured areas and affected areas in need of additional healing.
A Therapeutic massage can also be good preparation for an adjustment. In addition to preparing the immediate area of concern, it helps you relax and heal as well as prevent injury.
Nutrition such as the appropriate supplements, herbs, vitamins and minerals for your body along with proper diet can help support healing, balance of hormones and proper weight to help with balance of your body and support for optimum function of your body through everyday life.
We encourage you to begin a regular Maintenance program combining these areas and if you are need of regular care to treat a specific condition talk with us today about your unique needs.
