Fast facts about Kybella for reducing double chins

  • Jul 26 2017

Excess skin and fat on our bodies is completely normal — and mostly unavoidable. This is especially true as we age and the elasticity in our skin starts to disappear. For those lucky enough to live in sunny states like California and Arizona, where days spent under warm rays are routine, skin has an increased chance of being damaged, and that can also lead to sagging and looseness.

Some people find this excess skin to be frustrating and even embarrassing — particularly when it is located around the face and neck, and this worry can affect both men and women of all ages. If you are one of them, you might be interested in learning about a new treatment called Kybella.

Kybella is unique from other procedures. As an injectable, it opens up the options for treating double chins and turkey necks. In fact, it is the only FDA-approved injectable to treat these concerns. If you are considering Kybella, you probably have some questions about how it works. Here are some basics about the procedure, as well as what you can expect as you undergo it.

How it works

Kybella is inserted into your body through an injection in our office. All in all, the process takes about 15 minutes and you can return to your normal routine after it concludes. You will be fully alert and awake during the process. The treatment utilizes a synthetic version of a naturally occurring molecule called deoxycholic acid. This acid breaks down and absorbs fat that lingers in your body. When we inject Kybella into your problem area, it destroys fat cells in the location, which prevents them from being able to store or build up additional fat.

How quickly you see results depends on many factors, including the current state of your chin. Most patients require at least two to three treatments before adequate results are obtained. Once you are at your desired chin shape, however, you will no longer need to continue the procedure. Since your fat cells will be destroyed, there will be no need for additional maintenance.

Preparing for injections

Kybella is great for many individuals, but it’s not perfect for everyone. Before receiving the treatment, you will undergo an exam to see if you are a good candidate. We will evaluate the root of your excess fat and discuss your profile goals. It might be helpful to review before-and-after photos to get a better understanding of what your results might look like. We will also need to know your medical history, including if you have received other facial procedures in the past.

If excess skin around your neck makes you feel self-conscious, you have options, and Kybella is one of them. Of course, we can’t answer everything in a blog post, so don’t hesitate to connect with us with any additional questions or concerns.
