According to recent studies, at least part of the answer is as close as your next meal. Many common foods have been shown to contain substances that help delay the onset of age-related diseases.
Some of the most powerful anti-aging foods include:
Berries. Blueberries, raspberries, and other deeply colored berries contain phytochemicals known as flavonoids. These antioxidants fight oxidation which leads to aging, and have been shown to improve brain function and slow the growth of some cancers. Many berries contain ellagic acid, which slows tumor growth.
Broccoli. Broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables, including cabbage, kale, cauliflower, and brussels sprouts contain a compound called glucosinolate, which, according to Dr. Russell Blaylock, author of The Blaylock Wellness Report, can help neutralize the cancer-causing effects of pesticides and herbicides. Eating them raw will help maintain their cancer-fighting enzymes.

Other studies have found that garlic reduces cholesterol levels, and an Indian study found it thins blood more effectively than aspirin.
Grapes. Rich in an antioxidant called resveratrol that is an anti-inflammatory and anti-coagulant, red grapes have been shown to extend the life span of test animals. Grapes also contain the bioflavanoid quercetin, which works with vitamin C (also found in grapes) to fight cancer, including cancers of the breast and colon.
Nuts. Nuts contain high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids that lower inflammation and are great for your heart as well as your brain. They also contain B vitamins and minerals, including selenium and magnesium. Studies show that nuts lower cholesterol and also aid the skin’s elastin and collagen to keep skin looking young.
Tomatoes. The generous amounts of the antioxidant lycopene in tomatoes help skin maintain its youthfulness, and may reduce the risk of developing heart disease, as well as several cancers, including breast, lung, and colon. The Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that men who ate 10 servings of tomato-based foods each week lowered their risk of developing prostate cancer by 45 percent.
Tea. Green and white teas contain large amounts of EGCG, a powerful antioxidant linked to a lower risk of heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and numerous types of cancer. In addition, tissues in the eye absorb antioxidants from tea called catachins that may protect aging eyes from glaucoma.

Sunday, May 23rd, 2010People with heart disease, including chronic heart failure, arrhythmias and angina, often end up in the emergency room and hospital because of complications associated with these disorders. Cardiologists have noticed that simple nutritional changes and the use of supplements can prevent many such visits.
Most studies on the nutritional treatment of heart failure concentrated only on one supplement. Even then, there was no control of diet or other known behaviors that increase risk. So the first step is to follow a healthy diet. Elements of a healthy diet include:
• Eating 5 to 10 servings of fruits and vegetables a day (mainly
high-nutrient dense vegetables, such as broccoli, greens,
cauliflower, brussels sprouts, and kale)
• Avoiding excess sugar
• Drinking purified water or white tea
• Increasing the intake of good fats (DHA) (EPA), and avoiding bad fats
(omega-6 fats)
• Avoiding seafoods high in mercury.
The importance of adequate sleep is often forgotten. Restful sleep reduces stress-induced free radicals and lipid peroxidation products, which can lead to many chronic diseases and worsen heart failure. Sleep also enhances the healing of tissues and organs.
HELPFUL SUPPLEMENTS INCLUDE:
• Acetyl-L-carnitine or L-Carnitine. This nutrient strengthens the heart muscle, reduces free radical damage, lowers tissue iron levels (a major source of free radicals), and reduces insulin resistance. Take 500 mg three times a day on an empty stomach.
• Hawthorn has been shown to lower blood pressure and to significantly strengthen the contraction of heart muscles. failure, and protect the heart against free-radical damage. Selenium, which protects the heart against dangerous free radicals, is especially important.
• DHA reduces inflammation in the heart muscle and coronary arteries and improves heart-muscle cell repair. The dosage is 1,000 mg
twice a day. I personally recommend Omega 3 fish oil which contains 820 mg of EPA/DHA per capsule, 2 capsules 2x per day to maximize your health benefits.
• Natural vitamin E. Get enough vitamin E. I prefer natural mixed topherals. Take 400 IU a day.
CoQ10 is a major energy molecule for the heart, and people with heart failure have lower levels. Statin cholesterol-lowering drugs can severely lower CoQ10 levels. Take 100 mg of the ubiquinol form three times a day.
• Magnesium citrate/malate/glycinate. Take 500 mg twice a day with meals to reduce cardiac inflammation, raise mitochondrial glutathione levels, and improve circulation through the small blood vessels of the
heart. Magnesium also helps prevent one of the major causes of sudden cardiac death— vasospasm of the coronary arteries. “Depression: The Fat Antidote In his book The Omega-3 Connection, by Dr. Andrew Stoll — director of the Psychological Research Laboratory at Harvard University’s McLean Hospital, and a faculty member of Harvard
Medical School — sites the case of a 45-year-old researcher so devastated by bipolar disorder (formerly known as manic depression) that she had great difficulty working or maintaining relationships
with her friends. Between periods of crippling depression, she suffered from explosions of anger. Despite numerous attempts to medically control her condition over a period of 23 years, she never got better. Instead, she found that her anti-psychotic medications made her
feel worse than the disease itself. Desperate, she entered Dr. Stoll’s double-blind, controlled study, in which he used Omega-3 fatty acids as the primary treatment. And within two weeks, all of her symptoms disappeared!
But that’s not the end of the story. Dr. Stoll used the same technique to dramatically cure the manic, violent and depressive symptoms in many of his other patients who had gotten no benefit from conventional medicines.”
One Study found that consuming more Omega-3 fats actually boosted the brain’s levels of depression fighting serotonin and made brain cells membranes more effective, causing them to work more like young, healthy brain cells.
It might shock you to know that severe depression is occurring more often in younger people even pre-teens. In fact, those born before 1945 were 100 times less likely to suffer from major depression at age 45
than those born after 1945. Even during the Great Depression, the condition was much less common. So what’s causing this spike in major depressive illness in the United States? The change in our diet is one major factor. Prior to World War II, people ate more vegetables and more wild meats and fish — foods all high in Omega-3 oils. Surprisingly, meats were once abundant in Omega-3 fats. That is because in the past, cattle grazed on plants — which are rich in Omega-3 oils. Today’s cattle are grain-fed, leaving beef with hardly any of the health-enhancing substance. (Which is why Dr. King always recommends purchasing grass-fed meats only.)
Researchers have found alternative treatments based on a connection between bipolar disorder and low dietary levels of Omega-3 fats. At the
Centre for Mental Health Research in Melbourne, Australia, studies found that high Omega-6 blood levels coupled with low Omega-3 levels were linked to more severe depression. It is vital to remember that Omega-3 oils are a principle component of cell membranes — especially in the brain. Studies at England’s University of Sheffield linked low Omega-3 fat levels in red-blood-cell membranes to depression, and other analysis has
confirmed this. Omega-3 fats fight depression by altering the brain’s neurotransmitters, increasing serotonin receptors and boosting dopamine levels in the frontal lobes. Dopamine is a substance that basically makes you more excited about life. It has been shown to
increase drive and motivation, which is generally lacking in depressed people.
We have long known that an overactive immune system can make you depressed. But researchers are fascinated to find that infectious diseases (such as the flu and various childhood infections) can produce immune chemicals that could directly affect the brain, causing depression. And now we know nutritional deficiencies can produce similar effects.
In a study in the March 2005 issue of the Journal of Experimental Medicine, researchers concluded that this fat component prevents inflammatory cells from working their way into the blood vessels,
where they can do their damage. And Omega-3 fats thin the blood slightly, inhibiting clotting. The miraculous oil effects are equal to taking one aspirin a day — but there is no danger of hemorrhaging to death and no increase risk of stroke like there is with aspirin. And unlike aspirin, Omega-3 will not eat a hole in your stomach or destroy your hearing. Of the almost one million people who die from heart attacks each year in this country, most perish because of uncontrollable spasms of the heart muscle, a condition known as arrhythmia. A lack of Omega-3 not only causes heart attack — it also plays a major role in initiating the arrhythmia. This was demonstrated by a recent study in the prestigious medical journal The Lancet. Researchers selected patients who had arrhythmias that couldn’t be controlled using conventional heart drugs. The patients were given high doses of Omega-3 fats, leaving a significant number free of arrhythmias. Many of the others ended up responding much better to their medications. Previous studies have shown that diets high in Omega-3 fats not only reduce heart arrhythmias but curtail seizures as well. Adding vitamin E (the natural form) improves the effectiveness even more.
The ratio of Omega-6 to Omega 3 today hovers between 20-to-1 and 15-to-1, and one study even shows women having a staggering 45-to-1 ratio. Experts now know the brain works best at a 1-to-1 ratio.
At first glance, it might seem that you simply need to increase your Omega-3 intake and otherwise continue your present diet. But studies tell us that’s just not enough. Doing so will reduce the healthful benefits of Omega-3. You must eliminate as many Omega-6 fats as possible, replacing your present vegetable oil with either extra-virgin olive oil or extra-virgin coconut oil. And you should check all of the processed foods you eat, to determine which oil was used to make the product. Virtually all foods use Omega-6 oils. This is especially true of breads, cakes, pies, cookies, chips, French fries and other fried foods (most commonly used Omega-6 oils are soybean oil, vegetable oil and canola oil which all lead to increased inflammation in the body).
Vegans are at special risk and many assume that taking flaxseed oil will protect them. Unfortunately, small children, the elderly and many with chronic illnesses cannot convert the flax oil into EPA and DHA. In that case, they can take pure DHA, which is derived from algae.
