Hypothyroid Disease or Autoimmune Disorder how can Nutrition help you?

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

Many people with thyroid disease have trouble getting well. The majority of hypothyroid disease is actually an autoimmune disease called Hashimoto thyroiditis. As an autoimmune disease, Hashimoto thyroiditis attacks the cells of the thyroid, slowly destroying its ability to function. Unfortunately, even when the disease is diagnosed correctly, the common treatment is just to replace the diminished thyroid hormone, usually with an oral tablet or pill of the thyroid hormone thyroxine (T4 or levothyroxine), a synthetic analog.

According to conventional medical practice, most patients with hypothyroidism will need to be on T4 treatment for the rest of their lives. The problem with only giving hormone replacement, is it does nothing to stop the progression of the true disease; it only masks some of the symptoms. So initially your thyroid tests come back normal. Meanwhile your immune system is still attacking your thyroid. Eventually your symptoms may get worse and more thyroid hormone may be prescribed. So while you are increasing your levels of thyroid hormones, making your levels of thyroid look normal on the lab results, you are still getting worse.

This may come as a shock. It did to me.  Autoimmune thyroid problems can present as hyperthyroid or hypothyroid. It may be marked by an inability to regulate our response to thyroid medications.

Next: Symptoms and causes of thyroid problems

Symptoms common to hypothyroidism are:

• Enlarged thyroid (or goiter)
• Trouble swallowing
• Intolerance to cold
• Mild weight gain
• Fatigue
• Constipation
• Dry skin
• Hair loss
• Heavy and irregular menses
• Infertility
• Difficulty concentrating or thinking

So how should it be treated? Autoimmune diseases are multi-factorial in their causes. That means that further tests must be done to properly evaluate the real underlying source of the disease. Some of the most common factors are:

• Wheat (gluten) sensitivities or celiac disease
• Sudden changes in the hormone estrogen that may occur after pregnancy, abortions or
menopause
Heavy metal toxicity
Vitamin D deficiency

Adrenal Fatigue, overload, or long term chronic stress

The important FACT is that without a more complete assessment of a complex situation, proper treatment is more than unlikely. And despite most usually reliable sites such as the mayoclinic.com, there is mention that the problem is autoimmune, but it’s treatment as such is not addressed.

How can you find out if this is a problem for you? First you can discuss this with your doctor or endocrinologist. This is not a hidden secret, ask them about testing for autoantibodies. Most endocrinologists perform these tests regularly. The two major ones tested are Thyroid Antithyroglobulin Ab and Thyroid Peroxidase Ab. People with Hashimoto’s disease have these antibodies in increased amounts, but people whose hypothyroidism is caused by other conditions do not. You can also find a source for testing thyroid autoantibodies by visiting Save on Labs.

Autoimmune diseases are not simple to treat and they require a sophisticated understanding of biochemistry and nutrition. But with proper diagnosis, the path to healing becomes more clearly defined.  Through a combination of the proper diet, nutrition, and biochemistry you can live an amazing balanced life.

12 Great Health Reasons to Eat Blueberries, Easy Steps to Good Nutrition by Dr. Stephanie King

Monday, August 9th, 2010

1.  Catechins found in blueberries activate fat-burning genes in abdominal fat cells to assist with weight loss, and belly fat loss in particular.  According to research at Tufts University, regularly ingesting catechins increases abdominal fat loss by 77 percent and double total weight loss.

2.  They contain a group of natural phytonutrients (plant nutrient) called proanthocyanidins which have a unique ability to protect both the watery and fatty parts of the brain against damage from some environmental toxins.

3.  Blueberries are one of the richest sources of proanthocyanidins.  These phytonutrients decrease free radicals levels that are linked to aging (yes wrinkling!) and disease.

4.  In animal studies, those given an extract of blueberries had less motor skill decline and performed better on memory tests than animals not given the blueberries.  Researchers conclude that compounds in blueberries may reverse some age-related memory loss and motor skill decline.

5.  Blueberries are packed with vitamins C, E, riboflavin, niacin, and folate.

6.  They are a rich source of the phytonutrients ellagic acid.  Ellagic acid has proven anticancer and genetic-material-protection capabilities.  It also encourages a healthy rate of apoptosis—how the body seeks out and destroys harmful or damaged cells, like cancer cells.

7.  Because they contain plentiful amounts of the phytonutrient quercetin, they may reduce the likelihood and severity of allergies.

8.  Blueberries contain minerals like iron, magnesium, manganese, and potassium.

9.  Blueberries contain salicylic acid—the natural version of aspirin.  Salicylic acid is known to thin the blood and reduce pain.

10.  Blueberries are excellent anti-inflammatory agents.  They increase the amounts of compounds called heat-shock proteins that decrease as people age.  When heat shock proteins decrease the result is inflammation and damage, particularly in the brain.  Research shows that by eating blueberries regularly, inflammation lessens.

11.  They increase the production of feel-good dopamine.  Dopamine is a natural neurotransmitter (brain messenger) that tends to be low in Parkinson’s.

12.  They just taste great.  Ok, this is no surprise but it’s a great reason to eat blueberries anyway.

Has the pace of life left you frazzled? Has balancing work, home, and family responsibilities left you overwhelmed? The stresses of our modern life can be too much for your stress glands to handle. The stress glands, primarily known as the adrenal glands, are two small, triangular-shaped glands that sit atop the kidneys. We don’t give them much thought until we start to experience symptoms of poor health. The adrenal glands keep us going through life’s stresses, but over time they can show signs of being overworked. How do you know if your adrenal glands are overworked? Here are 24 signs:

Omega 3 Fatty Acids latest research on preventing cancer, brain health, & heart health…

Fish Boosts Health 8 Ways

Fish is quite a health catch. The reason? It’s loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, a type of polyunsaturated “good fat” with numerous cardiovascular benefits. All seafood contains varying amounts of two omega-3s – DHA and EPA – but oily fish such as sardines, salmon, and mackerel are particularly rich in these nutrients.

The heart-healthy actions of omega-3s are well-documented, so much so that the American Heart Association recommends eating at least two servings of fatty fish each week. But omega-3s, which reduce inflammation throughout the body, are also key players in boosting brain function, improving eyesight, enhancing fetal development, and even preventing cancer.

Fish is also a calorie-conscious choice for adding protein to your diet, since, unlike many meat sources, it’s low in saturated fat. And many varieties are loaded with minerals such as iron, zinc, and calcium. But while canned fish can be just as good a choice as fresh, don’t expect to net stellar nutritional results with fried fish.

Here are eight reasons to go fishing in your grocery aisle:

Heart. Eating one to two servings of fish a week could reduce your risk of dying of a heart attack by a third or more. Research has shown that omega-3 fatty acids decrease risk of dangerous arrhythmias (abnormal heartbeats). Omega-3s also decrease triglyceride levels, slow growth rate of atherosclerotic plaque, and lower blood pressure (slightly), according to the American Heart Association.

Cancer. Regular use of fish oil supplements was associated with a 32 percent reduced risk of breast cancer in a study of 35,000 women, reported in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention. A Harvard study found that men who ate fish more than three times a week cut their chances of developing advanced prostate cancer by 40 percent. The main cancer-fighter is probably omega-3 oils, but generous amounts of vitamins A and D may also help.

Brain. Research suggests that omega-3s contribute to better mental function. A 2007 Dutch study, reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that people over 50 with the highest levels of omega-3s in their blood scored significantly better in cognitive tests that measured speed of information processing and sensorimotor reaction time. A study in the journal Archives of Neurology found that participants who consumed fish once a week or more had 60 percent less risk of Alzheimer’s disease compared with those who rarely or never ate fish.

Stroke. Intake of fish is inversely related to risk of stroke, according to an analysis published in the journal Stroke. Consuming fish as seldom as one to three times each month may protect against the incidence of ischemic stroke, the type caused by plaque buildup and blood clots in the arteries that lead to the brain.

Vision. The University of Maryland Medical Center reports that in a survey of more than 3,000 people over the age of 49, those who ate more fish were less likely to have macular degeneration. A clinical study of 350 people with macular degeneration and 500 without the eye disease found that those with a good balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids and more fish in their diets were less likely to have the age-related condition, which can lead to blindness.

Mood. A study of healthy volunteers at the University of Pittsburgh found that those who had lower blood levels of omega-3s were more likely to report mild or moderate symptoms of depression, a more negative outlook, and be more impulsive. The reverse was true of those with higher blood levels of omega-3s. “A number of previous studies have linked low levels of omega-3 to clinically significant conditions such as major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, substance abuse, and attention deficit disorder,” said Sarah Conklin, a postdoctoral scholar at the university’s School of Medicine.  This study opens the door for future research looking at what effect increasing omega-3 intake … has on people’s mood.”

Immune function. Because omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties, researchers have theorized they could be useful in managing inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. An article in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition reviews a number of clinical trials of fish-oil supplementation to treat rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, psoriasis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, and migraine headaches, and concludes there is “significant benefit, including decreased disease activity and a lowered use of anti-inflammatory drugs.”

Infant development. Omega-3s have been found to be essential for both neurological and early visual development of babies, advises the American Pregnancy Association. Research has confirmed that adding EPA and DHA to the diet of pregnant women has a positive effect on these factors, and may reduce infant allergies, prevent preterm labor, and increase gestational weight.

On the downside, certain types of fish may contain high levels of mercury and other toxins. Because mercury can impair youthful neurodevelopment, pregnant women and small children should avoid shark, swordfish, king mackerel, tilefish, and other larger, predatory varieties. Some commonly eaten, high-omega-3 fish that are low in mercury are canned light tuna (vs. albacore), salmon, and sardines.

Some fish, such as tilapia and catfish, are not only low in omega-3s and but are high in arachidonic acid, a type of omega-6 fatty acid that’s also found in red meat and egg yolks. The Mayo Clinic notes that too much arachidonic acid can increase your risk of heart disease.  Due to toxicity levels in many of the fish, we recommend taking a high quality pharmaceutical grade Omega 3 Supplement.  Our office recommends Xymogen and Metagenics as two products that are free of contaminents and very high in EPA and DHA which are often very low in many Omega 3 supplements in the market place when looking at the actual milligrams dosages.

5 Amazing Foods that will help you Sleep by Dr. King, Alternative Health Care in Pasadena, CA

5 FOODS THAT WILL HELP YOU SLEEP AND THE WORST SABOTEURS…

It may have been sleepless several nights for many of you, but when I have a sleepless night I wonder what I ate or did that kept me up. So in thinking about food, and how it’s intimately connected to our patterns of sleep. If you can’t sleep, and life is calm and happy, maybe it’s something you ate or didn’t. The foods we eat can dramatically affect how much, and how well, we snooze. Some calm and relax, some wake up the nervous system, and some just downright wire you for the night.

What you should eat for deeper sleep depends partly on your patterns. If you toss and turn before drifting off but then doze soundly for the rest of the night, you might benefit from adding slow-burning carbs (beans, sweet potatoes, berries) to your evening meal to prompt the production of serotonin, a brain chemical that promotes calm. If you zonk out quickly but wake up a few hours later, you might be suffering from blood sugar fluctuations. I’ve tried a high-protein snack before bed–a handful of walnuts, a spoonful of almond butter, a small cube of cheese–and these tend to keep blood sugar levels steady throughout the night.

Focus on foods with soothing nutrients, like magnesium, which helps relax muscles and calms the body and B vitamins, key in the production of serotonin and other brain chemicals key to sleep. Trytophan, an amino acid that’s needed to make sleep-inducing serotonin, is especially effective when it’s paired with complex, slow-burning carbs. Supplements like 5HTP promote the production of tryptophan and work very well with many of my patients.

And you should banish foods that stimulate the body and disrupt sleep. And here are some of the worst saboteurs…Caffeine’s the worst, and its effect can last up to 10 hours, so steer clear of coffee, tea, sodas, chocolate and other foods that contain caffeine after lunchtime. Some other foods have a similar sleep-disrupting effect. Avoid these five sleep saboteurs:

– Sugar. It’s the worst; it prompts the brain to release stress hormones that block sleep, and causes blood sugar fluctuations that can wake you in the wee hours.

– Chocolate. In addition to caffeine, it’s high in theobromine, a stimulating plant compound.

– Red wine contains sleep-disrupting alcohol, as well as tyramine, an amino acid that increases the brain’s levels of stimulating neurotransmitters.  So it may relax you at first and you may think it’s helping you to fall asleep but then you may be waking up later on that night.

– Aspartame is worse than sugar; like monosodium glutamate (MSG), it encourages the release of excitatory nerve transmitters that can keep you up all night.

– Spicy foods like garlic, ginger and hot peppers are way too warming and stimulating to eat before bed.

For better, faster and deeper Zs, ease yourself into sleep with these soothing snacks…1.Turkey has the highest levels of tryptophan. Chicken, seafood and soybeans are close seconds. Soothing snacks: a slice of turkey and a few avocado cubes, rolled up in a lettuce leaf; a small bowl of beans plus a couple of grilled shrimp.

2. Yogurt and other dairy products are also rich in sleep-prompting tryptophan. Soothing snacks: a blueberry and flax seed smoothie; a small bowl of yogurt with chopped walnuts and strawberries, make sure you’re using organic so you’re staying clear of harmful chemicals and hormones.

3. Almonds and other nuts and seeds are rich in both tryptophan and nerve-calming magnesium. Soothing snacks: half an apple cut into wedges and spread with almond butter; a small dish of blackberries sprinkled with chopped cashews.

4. Beans and soy are high in B vitamins and magnesium, as well as tryptophan. Soothing snacks: a small dish of hummus with red pepper strips and celery for dipping; a quarter cup of black beans with a slice of avocado.

5. Spinach and other leafy greens like chard, kale and collards, are loaded with both magnesium and B vitamins. Soothing snacks: a small bowl of chopped kale with feta cheese and almonds; a handful of spinach with turkey cubes.

If making these changes don’t work for you and you continue to suffer from insomnia then your body more then likely has some underlying adrenal, thyroid, or other hormonal or perhaps organ related issues that require a more in depth detailed look.  Dr. King an expert in analyzing the body nutritionally and using natural products to balance the body offers an amazing 2 hour session that looks at blood work, our advanced computerized analysis and an extensive 18 page questionnaire of your past history and current habits to put you on a path to ultimate wellness and feeling amazing again.  For more information simply email skingdc@earthlink.net or call our office at 626-799-0557.

Top 10 Foods that Cause Cancer by Dr. Stephanie King in Pasadena, CA

Monday, July 19th, 2010

Nearly 1.5 million new cases of cancer were expected to be diagnosed last year–while 559,650 people were expected to die from the disease, according to the American Cancer Society. That’s more than 1,500 people a day–such a startling statistic. In the book Cancer: 101 Solutions to a Preventable Epidemic (New Society Publishers, 2007) the authors write that the Number 4 solution is to “Eat a Healthy Diet.” Listed within are the 10 Foods and Drinks to Limit or Eliminate:

1. All charred food, which create heterocyclic aromatic amines, known carcinogens. Even dark toast is suspect.
2. Well-done red meat. Medium or rare is better, little or no red meat is best.
3. Sugar, both white and brown–which is simply white sugar with molasses added. (See Care2’s Directory of Natural Sweeteners for great, healthy alternatives.)
4. Heavily salted, smoked and pickled foods, which lead to higher rates of stomach cancer.5. Sodas/soft drinks, which pose health risks, both for what they contain–sugar and various additives–and for what they replace in the diet–beverages and foods that provide vitamins, minerals and other nutrients.
6. French fries, chips and snack foods that contain trans fats.
7. Food and drink additives such as aspartame.
8. Excess alcohol.
9. Baked goods, for the acrylamide.
10. Farmed fish, which contains higher levels of toxins such as PCBs.

Anti-aging Foods with Health Expert Dr. Stephanie King in San Marino, CA - Just a Virtual Call away..

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

We have yet to find  the legendary Fountain of Youth, and we continue to search for that magic potion that will delay aging. According to recent studies, at least part of the answer is as close as your next meal. Many common foods have been shown to contain substances that help delay the onset of age-related diseases.
Some of the most powerful anti-aging foods include:

Berries. Blueberries, raspberries, and other deeply colored berries contain phytochemicals known as flavonoids. These antioxidants fight oxidation which leads to aging, and have been shown to improve brain function and slow the growth of some cancers. Many berries contain ellagic acid, which slows tumor growth.

Broccoli. Broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables, including cabbage, kale, cauliflower, and brussels sprouts contain a compound called glucosinolate, which, according to Dr. Russell Blaylock, author of The Blaylock Wellness Report, can help neutralize the cancer-causing effects of pesticides and herbicides. Eating them raw will help maintain their cancer-fighting enzymes.
If you don’t like to eat them, we even have them all wrapped up in a power packed capsule that’s amazing.

Fish. Oily fish are packed with omega-3 fatty acids that fight inflammation. People who eat fish regularly have lower rates of Alzheimer’s disease and cardiovascular disease. A recent study from the University of California, San Francisco, found that omega-3 fatty acids keep the DNA of heart patients from unraveling. The American Heart Association recommends two servings of fish each week or you can take Omega 3 fish oil 1500-3000mg per day.

Garlic. A study found that women who ate a clove of garlic at least once a week lowered their risk of developing colon cancer by 50 percent, and a study at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill found that people who eat garlic have half the risk of stomach cancer and two-thirds the risk of colorectal cancer when compared to people who avoid it. Other studies have found that garlic reduces cholesterol levels, and an Indian study found it thins blood more effectively than aspirin.

Grapes. Rich in an antioxidant called resveratrol that is an anti-inflammatory and anti-coagulant, red grapes have been shown to extend the life span of test animals. Grapes also contain the bioflavanoid quercetin, which works with vitamin C (also found in grapes) to fight cancer, including cancers of the breast and colon.

Nuts. Nuts contain high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids that lower inflammation and are great for your heart as well as your brain. They also contain B vitamins and minerals, including selenium and magnesium. Studies show that nuts lower cholesterol and also aid the skin’s elastin and collagen to keep skin looking young.

Tomatoes. The generous amounts of the antioxidant lycopene in tomatoes help skin maintain its youthfulness, and may reduce the risk of developing heart disease, as well as several cancers, including breast, lung, and colon. The Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that men who ate 10 servings of tomato-based foods each week lowered their risk of developing prostate cancer by 45 percent.

Tea. Green and white teas contain large amounts of EGCG, a powerful antioxidant linked to a lower risk of heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and numerous types of cancer. In addition, tissues in the eye absorb antioxidants from tea called catachins that may protect aging eyes from glaucoma.

Thanks again, Dr. King — We are amazed at all of your accomplishments and testimonies. You are seriously an amazing Doctor. TODHD viewers would like to learn more about you –  your clinic and your practices.

Dr. King - One thing that caught our eyes – was that you treat each individual to their own issues. Whether it is weight loss or other problems, you find the treatment that fits best to them… all the way down to the adrenal gland and the adrenal gland functions plus Bio-Identical Hormones. Can you explain what the adrenal gland is –  and how important it is?

The Adrenal Gland is probably one of the most common areas I treat in my Health Care Practice because of the amount of stress people are under in today’s society.

It’s so common in fact that patient’s literally come in saying “I think my adrenals are shot”.

The Adrenal Gland has two basic functions.

(1) is to make the “mother hormone” Pregnenolone which is the one responsible for memory function, energy, thought process

-  and  -

(2) the body uses it as the building block to make the sex hormones DHEA, Estrogen, Testosterone, and Progesterone.

The Adrenals are in fact responsible for the bulk of hormone production as women go through Peri-menopause and Menopause and continue to supply our hormones thereafter.  The Adrenals also produce adrenaline:  We all know that response when we’re stressed, scared and need that extra pick up - adrenals then kick in to push us through.  Kind of like the turbo in a cool racecar -  they are our version of turbo.

Now-a-days people seem to be running on adrenaline 24/7 literally and since we’re not designed to run on turbo all the time that means people are burning out their Adrenals.

The Adrenals can’t go on forever once they run out of fuel Pregnenlenone -  so they then “steal” our sex hormones to make more -  causing all sorts of symptoms like: early menopausal symptoms, severs PMS, perimenopause.

This could mean hot flashes at 30, migraine headaches, sleepless nights, brain fog, overwhelming fatigue, joint aches and pains.

As the Adrenals continue to be stressed it’s survival is imperative and they’ll steal your sex hormones to survive and secrete cortisol as a by-product.  This reeks havoc on the body besides hormone imbalances.

Excess cortisol causes insomnia, weight gain, and terrible body aches and joint pain.

Yikes, sounds like a lot of people today.  But don’t fear this can be helped and resolved and that doesn’t mean you have to quit your job.

And what about Bio-Identical Hormones – what do they do for you?

So touching back on the Adrenal Glands from your previous question and how the Adrenals cause hormonal imbalances in the body… One of the ways we address this is through replacing the hormones that we run out of  - with hormones your body will recognize.

We call this Bio-Identical Hormones (BHRT).

These are hormones that your body will utilize just like your own natural hormones because they most closely resemble your own natural hormones.

Rather then a synthetic chemical that’s been altered multiple times in a lab, we use natural herbs and plants to make a natural form so that your body will easily convert it and recognize it…  And in some women they will even stimulate your body to begin making your own hormones again.

Some people need a small amount to support their body and they begin to level out - others may need to replenish years of abuse to their body and may need to re-build their reserves.

This is why my clinic is so unique: Every treatment session is individualized to the patient’s own body. For what they need and what their body responds best to - so, in essence everything is customized.

Some women may need a small amount of BHRT, while others may need specific herbs to stimulate hormone production.

It’s actually a rather complicated process, sometimes we “fill the tank” -  and sometimes we “fix the control center that drained the tank”,  and sometimes we do both… It depends on the individual and what’s best for their body.

What got you involved in Alternative Health Care?

Wow, that’s a big question and I literally could go on for days on that one.

I believe that we all have a “gift” or a “calling” or some may call a “light” that we are to bring to this world.

Iit’s who we are and when we’re in that place we are at peace and at our very best.

I found that gift at age 8, although I didn’t really know it.

Growing up with a sister who was physically challenged having Cerebral Palsy I had a very unique outlook on life very early on.  We all took a very active role in making sure my sister had every opportunity to be the best despite what many traditional doctors told us “that she’d never do anything expect lay on the floor”.

I guess I’m slightly jaded against tradition having grown up seeing and hearing these statements and then hearing other non-traditional doctors state just the opposite  - andcome up with such amazing almost “crazy”  types of therapies - that provided tremendous changes in how she performed and grew.

Honestly Alternative Health Care should be Primary Care as far as I’m concerned because what I saw in Alternative Health Care was a doctor who had to also overcome a “stigma”.

So at age 8 being a bit of an overachiever I began reading books that my Mom had left around the house.   And not wanting to take away from my sister’s time I started learning on my own by reading those books, and teaching others what was best.

Seriously… Picture this 8-10 year old walking around telling whoever would listen about nutrition and all the bad things eating sugar would do to your body.

It’s quite comical to think back on, but really it was the start of who I was supposed to be. From that point on I challenged everyone and every idea in life. If it was traditional I challenged it and if someone said it couldn’t be done I found a way to do it -  so why not start a practice built on the same premise? A practice designed to treat those who lost hope and who were tossed aside because maybe they challenged their doctor’s ideas? Or maybe they expected more from the system then a simple pill, or a 5 minute appointment?

I wanted a place that I would want to go to, a doctor I would want to see, someone who would not stop until they made you feel amazing again.   Someone who actually sat down and listened to what I had to say, someone who participated in my health care and wanted me to play an active role back. Someone who didn’t rely on antiquated knowledge but continued to stay connected with the latest research.

Honestly I could take hours on this subject but I wanted to create a place -  a safe haven if you would -  that people would feel safe going to - to get the help and care they needed and deserved. A peaceful non-traditional safe environment which is staffed with doctors that care and may “care too much”.

It’s corny but I wanted it to be a place where you would get a hug if you cried.

That’s my clinic, and that’s me Dr. King.

When other people have given up – you seem to strive harder – to work harder – to find the right treatment. Can you give us a small example of a major success, in your opinion – of a bad case that you managed to help out?

I could say this is easy because I have so many great emails, cards, videos and notes from patients that often times so overwhelmed me I couldn’t help but cry that my dreams have come true in having this great “healing”  center.

And on the other hand this question is tough because it’s hard to choose just one to talk about so I’ll pick the one most recent in my heart.

I’ll call this patient John.

John came to me after suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia which is a chronic pain syndrome, daily headaches, depression, and insomnia -  meaning he couldn’t sleep. He had these conditions for years and was on multiple medications that were not working… he just couldn’t get through the day and the thought of not sleeping another night… well… let’s just say it left him suicidal.

He brought me 4 inches worth of medical records and tests to go through most of which showed nothing.

We spent about 3 hours talking…  going over his history, his personal life and running through my amazing computerized program LSA Pro (which is Bioenergentic Testing) which unlike Lab work, tests stressors in the body so it will look at underlying issues that traditional blood work may not detect.

We also did Neurotransmitter Testing and Saliva Testing to look at his Neurotransmitters and Hormones which all relate to his type of symptoms.

These were all things no one had ever looked at.

Once I had all this new information the results were shocking! The hormones levels were completely depleted in this 30 year old male and his neurotransmitters - which are things like serotonin, dopamine, epinephrine, norepinephrine - they were completely unbalanced to the point I could understand why my patient was almost suicidal.

Off to our custom lab I went and had a special formula just for this patient made of herbs, neurotransmitters, androgens for hormones, vitamins, and minerals to rebalance all we found.

The best email I ever received and this one did make me cry was:

“My sleep has been one hundred times better from when we started.  My night-time pain has diminished, which is awesome. Mood has improved. yeah! No head aches, Thank you so much for all of your help, I feel I have finally found a doctor who is helping me after a life time of pill pushers. Thank You!”

This was honestly a tough case and John is now sleeping pain free through the night, is headache free and we are also working towards better and better days.  This was a BIG win!

What exactly is My Zerona – and how can that help people?

This is so amazing!

This is my non-invasive, no pain, no bruising, fat melting laser.

The Zerona Laser, which uses cold laser technology or low-level laser feels no different than laying on the beach. But the laser works on the fat cell opening up the “pores” of the cell - liquefying the fat - so the fat oozes out into the interstitial fluid, or basically your lymphatic system, so your body can naturally move it out.

So in basic terms… it takes the cottage cheesy thick fat and melts it into liquid. It then moves it into your waste system and your body essentially will sweat it out or eliminate it out and the cell just shrinks up into nothing. You lose inches quickly in under a month.

Typically people do anywhere from 6-12 sessions depending on how many inches they want to lose off their body -  and in combination with a healthy lifestyle the results are nothing short of amazing.

Literally my patients have lost anywhere from 2-11 inches off their body.

Magazines such as Women’s World, Shape and Harper’s Bazaar have called it the new liposuction and even deemed it better than liposuction due to the fact there’s no side-effects or down time.

It’s been premiered on TV shows “The Doctors”, “Good Day LA” “Fox News” and many more because it’s just so amazing that this painless laser melts away fat.

Everyone always call in and asks where can they do it, since liposuction is a surgery and is restrictive. Zerona is a painless laser and you can do it literally on any area of the body.  Typically people pick target areas like stomach, hips, thighs, but you can also do love handles, back, arms, chin, under the eyes, anywhere you can think.

What made you get involved with My Zerona?

I love my Zerona Laser and have no regrets in bringing this amazing new technology into my office.

The results are nothing short of amazing!  To take teenagers who’ve really struggled  - to Gastric Bypass patients who failed and now have succeeded in losing several sizes is such a joy to me.

I am really into doing things naturally, harmlessly -  and in a way to protect the body and weight loss, in my opinion, should be no different.

But I also understand the frustration of finally making that lifestyle decision and wanting it yesterday.

I wanted a non-surgical option for patients that was not only  - not - harmful but also helped their body,  so they didn’t have to go down the liposuction, Gastric Bypass, Band loop route and risk harm to their body and endure the side-effects.

I brought in Zerona as that alternative so my patients can easily and naturally lose anywhere from 2-11 inches off any of their problem areas. Literally dropping 1-3 sizes without doing  harm to their body.  What’s even better is that Zerona Laser also reduces cholesterol, triglycerides and the hormone Leptin, which is responsible for causing the hunger sensation -  so it’s truly a win-win for patients.

We are giving them an amazing body, in a healthy way and they get healthy side benefits too.

I love that, and what’s even better is that at my office I put together an amazing customized Lifestyle Program for my Zerona Patients where we sit down and  - after they fill out an 18 page questionnaire  - we design the best foods for them to eat and the best nutrients for their body to maximize not only their metabolism, but also their health. We address any issues that created the problem to begin with.

This way they lose the inches, lose the weight, feel great, get healthy and keep it off.

This is something that is unique to my office, and I really spend a lot of time working with patients teaching them about food and nutrition and making good choices:  From how to eat at a restaurant,  how to shop at the market,  how to get through a vacation and still enjoy life.

I’m very proud of this plan, because I personally hate diets and they really don’t work so I love the Lifestyle Program!!!

You deal with so many people – from so many walks of life…  You work on them after they have given up hope…  How comforting is it to know that you have changed so many people’s lives?

This is why I do what I do.

You know how many people get so say they LOVE, LOVE, LOVE going to work every day?

I know it’s very few because most of my patients are so stressed because of their job.

Every book I’ve ever read, every night I’ve stayed up late studying, every test I’ve ever taken, every seminar I go to, every weekend I‘ve given up to stay at the top of my game is sooooooo worth it when I take someone who has totally given up on ever feeling good again, or worse taken someone who says “I’m just old and am supposed to feel this way” -  and then make them feel amazing again and give them back their life.

I look forward to emails because every day I get a pick me up with these positive uplifting emails from patients telling me “Oh My God, today for the first time in 9 years I’m sleeping through the night and no meds!” or “No more hot flashes I can finally wear sweaters again!” or “I can eat food for the first time and not be in pain the rest of the day!”

How can this not be the greatest source of joy?

People always say what would you do if you won the lotto?

I always think I could never walk away from my patients I’d just buy the whole building so people could stay longer and not have to leave; everyone always wants to stay because my office is so peaceful and I always have to tell them I need the room.

Tell us about your clinic – from your point of view…  what will a client see when they walk in?

Well this will shock you.

I always say you wont see the “traditional” white walls, white coat, and grey furniture when you walk into my office.

What you’ll see and hear as you walk through my door:

You’ll hear running water. You’ll smell fragrant aromatherapy. You’ll feel instantly comforted by calming colors on the walls and comfy furniture -  all of our lights are slightly dimmed to create that relaxed peaceful environment -  and we have relaxation music playing in the background throughout our office.

Our tables are heated and padded with Tempurpedic cushions and everything is designed with “you”  in mind.

I thought about what  I would want if I were the patient  - and that’s what you get.

My office is like a family -  you are warmly greeted by friendly staff who actually remember your name and take the time to get to know you.

There is no double or triple booking like other offices, time slots are specifically scheduled for you and ample time is scheduled just for you.

This is your time to heal and the environment is set just for that.

You also do phone consults from out of state –  correct?

Yes, I have patients and clients all over the country and some out of the country thanks to today’s incredible technology.

All of my Nutrition, Lifestyle and Hormone balancing consults can be done via phone and internet. Our computerized programs are done via remote access -  meaning we send you the testing cradle which connects to your home PC and you link up to the main server and we link our PC to the main server and we can test you right from the comfort of your own home.

Any paperwork, lab work etc…can all be sent via email and fax so it makes it so easy for us to work the entire session right on the phone all you need is a computer and high speed internet.

We talk to you just like you’re in our office -  while you’re right on the phone.

Any recommended products or treatment remedies are then mailed to your home with no shipping charges.

It’s a great program and we made it easy whether you choose to come in and see us in person or we work via remote.

And personally I’m not a “techy” person and I can do it so it’s all very easy.

I have housewives in Vermont that have done this so pretty much, I think, anyone can do it.

You have recently became a part of the TODHD network – and now have your own shows and even a group – tell the viewers what they can expect to see and hear about from your shows.

This is such an amazing opportunity!

I love the ability to be able to community beyond my four walls.

I have a great group on Channel 40 Healthy Lifestyle called Daily Health Tips w/Dr. King and what I do is bring out as much information about nutrition, vitamins, supplements, newest research, health, and eating healthy.

The show will air on both Healthy Lifestyles channel 40 and HITMANPRTV channel 51.

Now I know not everyone likes to read information so here comes the SHOW to run on Healthy Lifestyles Channel 40 what I’m bringing is the ability for people to call in and ask health and nutrition related questions since we know there is so much information out there and a lot of it can be not only confusing but also contradictory.

I get emails all day long from patients every time they read a news article and they want to know whether it is true or not true.

So first of all I want a place where people can raise those questions via the online chat and call ins.

Secondly I want to bring on various experts in the Health & Wellness field to talk about different topics and also teach the audience about unique topics that will help us all live a healthier lifestyle -  because none of us are perfect.

It’s a place where we can all strive to be better in our lives. From learning how to pick a good personal trainer -  to how to do your own workout at home or how shop at the market and  how to pick out the best supplements. We will learn about some amazing doctors and healing practitioners that are out there, as well -  and about new technology.

I hope to really bring a well-rounded show to the channel that touches various interests and I will definitely be listening to the audience on what they’d like to hear -  which is what’s great about the online chat.  And knowing the group people can contact me any time to make suggestions.

Do you have a schedule out yet for your shows?

Thursdays at 6:00pm is the plan on Channel 40 and Channel 51 concurrently. We most likely will be making it a 1-2 hour show.

My publicist Allen Miller of HItmanPR is producing it with TODHD.

He also has  channel 51 HitmanPRTV on TODHD.

Is there anything you’d like to say to the TODHD viewers?

Yes, please don’t see me as the traditional “stuffy” doctor.

I’m sure by my pictures you can see that I’m not.

I’d like to interact with all of you and bring you great content and information that is important to you.

I have an idea of what you’d like to learn and know about  -  but nobody knows better then you what you value -  as far as health and wellness…  so I am always open to feedback and suggestions -  and welcome any that you may have.

I encourage you to join my Group on Channel 40 and begin chatting about what you’d like to learn -  so I can bring you some amazing episodes.

I also have the My Zerona Group on Channel 51 HitmanPRTV for those interested in learning more about the Laser.

Thank you so much Dr. King – you’re an inspiration to all of us.

Dr. King’s Nutrition Tip: Grass-FED versus FREE -range meat, be careful how you buy. Grass-fed means the animal must have heat eaten only grass, and it’s mother’s milk and have continual access to pastures. American grass fed means raised humanely and without hormones or antibiotics. Free range basically means the animal only had to have “outside” access that’s it. To learn more about nutrition and how to better take care of you have your health analyzed by Dr. King and get on track with the best program.

Dr. King’s Health Tip: 85% of women experience at least one irritating symptom of PMS and many women much, much more not to mention perimenopause which typically begins about age 35-40 and many women mistake for severe PMS. Some simple steps you can take: 1. EAT Broccoli rich in calcium and vitamin D which attacks the “bad” estrogen helps to reduce emotional and physical symptoms of PMS too. 2. Go HERBAL chasteberry often used in Europe has been shown to reduce bloating swelling and pre-period bloating and tenderness, also Ginkgo Biloba has also been shown to reduce symptoms 3. MOVE IT women who did moderate exercise reported less bloating and fewer mood swings, some women even reported decreased occurrence of depression with weight training….there are many tips and ways to balance the body talk to Dr. King today about your body specifically and feel amazing again.

Dr King’s health tip: don’t just drink regular water to flush the toxins out of your system, add one bottle of electrolyte water to rebalance your electrolytes as well like Smart water or the Trader Joe’s version and remember you need 1/2 your body weight in ounces of water that’s typically at least 1 gallon a day. Great for weight loss too.

Dr King’s nutrition tip: sugar, high fructose corn syrup and fruit juice concentrates can prematurely age skin as early as your mid-30’s. Sugars form harmful molecules called advanced glycation end products which weaken collagen and elastin there’s the advanced aging.  Another good reason to eliminate or at least reduce sugar from your diet.

Dr King’s health tip: one of my favorite antioxdant, heart protector and cellular energy better then coffee it’s Coenzyme Q10 talk to me about best pharmaceutical grade forms and dosing for you.

Dr King’s nutrition tip: increase your immune system and collagen aiding in healing joint and tendon injuries and reverse aging with this simple nutrient in therapeutic doses it’s Vitamin C the one I personally take is Xymogen’s Bio-C.

Dr King’s health tip: people who follow a diet high in whole unprocessed grains, fruits, vegetables, olive oil and fish outlive people who don’t by about 6 years and that’s a healthy outlive!

Dr. King’s Zerona tip: There’s a hidden key to shedding pounds, and it’s got little to do with calories or willpower say Scientists—MEET YOUR HORMONES, and they’re surprising effect on weight..that’s why Dr. King not only has her hormone balancing programs but combines them with the Zerona Laser to maximize your inch loss. Many people begin to lose weight without issue after balancing their hormones and often don’t even need additional aids. Let’s talk about Adrenal Glands, cortisol, DHEA, sex hormones and what they are doing to your mood and your weight today!

Dr King’s nutrition tip: even 30 minutes of regular afternoon dozing i.e. a nap decreases the risk of heart attack. Going all the time with too little rest and relaxation pumps up our adrenal glands causing not only things like high blood pressure but in others can show up as weight gain, anxiety, moodiness or worst of all lack of sex drive.

Dr King’s nutrition tip: smoking destroys collagen and elastin that’s accelerated aging and it destroys levels of estrogen which is necessary to keep skin firm.

Dr King’s nutrition tip: fight free radicals and protect your skin, heart and immune system with supplements like CQ10, A and C.
